War Child Secret 7'' Competition
The War Child Secret 7'' competition is an annual competition where artists around the world create album covers that will eventually be auctioned off for charity. This year D&AD's New Blood Awards provided an opportunity to submit a design that would be judged for both competitions.
I created an album cover for the song Return to Oz by Scissor Sisters. This song alludes to the crystal meth epidemic in the gay community with many references to Oz.
The design is primarily a collage of painted cardboard and soda packaging with slight digital editing. The design design alludes to the cursed poppy field scene in The Wizard of Oz and the use of Coca Cola packaging is a reference to the song's recurring theme of hedonism and short-lived pleasures. The "poppies" are also intended to look slightly like blood vessels. The design juxtaposes bright, colorful hues with a desolate cardboard background as a contrast between experiencing reality under stimulant drugs and the bleak reality of the situation.
